Hairdresser

Hairdresser in action.

A hairdresser is a person trained to cut and maintain the hair. She can work in a hairdressing salon, at home or at her client. The types of hairstyles, techniques and tools used are numerous and vary according to the mandate given to the hairdresser.

The hairdresser must have good physical strength because he stays up all day. He must also have an artistic sense and be able to communicate well in order to properly welcome and advise his clients. In some countries, he also plays the role of barber.

Hairdresser Description

The hairdresser talks first with his client to advise a haircut according to his wishes and his hair. Then he washed his hair, and finally cut them.

Some cuts are better when the hair is dry and others wet. He can apply special techniques such as set-in, ironing, use the straightener to smooth the hair or make a perm. The hairdresser can prescribe, advise or recommend hair products.

History

Since antiquity, there are stalls in Greece and Rome where men come to get their hair cut, women getting their hair done at home.

In the Middle Ages, the corporation of barbers-surgeons performs these tasks. As surgeons perform more important interventions, they give up to their students or at least the least educated, the art of shaving and making hair.

By an edict published in November 1691, Louis XIV officially separated the hairdresser’s job from the barber-surgeon by institutionalizing the community of barber-surgeons and that of the barbers-swimmers-steamers-wigs who moved home.

Hair salons only appear at the end of the nineteenth century. Reserved for men, they do not open to women until the turn of the twentieth century.
